The University of Birmingham (UoB) is a global top 100 university with a reputation for high-quality fundamental and translational research fuelling solutions to contemporary problems. Within UoB's School of Engineering, the Digital Health and Medical Imaging group (DHMI), led by Prof. Theodoros Arvanitis, is working on multiple EU Horizon projects. As part of this commitment, DHMI is actively contributing to the MedSecurance project, bringing its expertise in digital health, AI in healthcare, healthcare data security, and IoMT (Internet of Medical Things) device security.
An important contribution from DHMI to the MedSecurance project is the development of a Threat Modelling Companion Component, which supports the Threat Vulnerability Risk Analysis (TVRA) tool. This component is mainly divided into two sub-components:
Threat Enhancement ComponentThis module uses a large language model to augment existing threat models. It takes as input:
Threats already identified by Spyderisk
A textual prompt
By using generative AI, it identifies additional cyber threats in IoMT systems that may have been missed. A notable advantage is its ability to continuously update with the latest emerging threats.
Mitigation Strategies ComponentThis module proposes up-to-date mitigation strategies for the threats identified. It takes as input:
The IoMT model (as a JSON file)
Identified threats from Spyderisk
A guiding textual prompt
It then suggests mitigation strategies aligned with ISO/IEC standards and NIST guidelines, tailored to specific use-case requirements.
Both tools have been developed and are currently in the testing phase with our use-case partners. These innovations represent MedSecurance’s commitment to international collaboration and standardization in digital health security.
Part of this work was presented at the MIE 2025 conference in Glasgow (19–21 May).Read the publication here: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40380684/
